Engraving: a working table — mortar, jar, candle, casebook, a saucer of dirt, a sealed filing, roots
Practitioner

Dana Batista.

Southern chaos-folk magician. Democratic socialist. Venēnum: A Field Manual for the Baneful Arts is complete and under contract negotiation with Inner Traditions; the press page gets linked the day it is signed. Thirty-six years of practice — twelve of them concentrated in thornwork — from a Fayetteville childhood full of Evangelical hymns and army rules to a working table in Cameron, North Carolina, where the graveyard dirt and the case law sit side by side.

I write and cast for people who know the South in their bones — who have watched the state, the church, and the market close ranks, and who are done being told that survival, hexing, or self-defense are overreactions. I reject the Wiccan Threefold Law and "harm none" moralism. I treat intentional consequence as a tool for boundary, defense, and community protection.

I am a Southern folk witch. Celtic and Norse work by ancestry, initiation, and devotion — my father's line. Southern Appalachian folk work through my mother. Taíno work by initiation, through my husband's family. Santa Muerte by initiation and devotion. I do not conflate them, and I name the source of every technique in your written protocol.

How you can check my word.

Occult work is thick with grift. I keep receipts so you can vet me without taking my word for anything.

Proof I.

Published Work

Venēnum: A Field Manual for the Baneful Arts in negotiation with Inner Traditions, an established occult specialty press with 50+ years of history. Full manuscript submitted May 2026; contract under negotiation. I'll link the ISBN and press page as soon as it's public.

Historical Sourcing

Every technique in my protocols and in the Venēnum manuscript carries its source — grimoire, court record, folklore collection, ethnography. My work is footnote-heavy on purpose. Ask me for a citation and you'll get one.

Written Case Records

Every client receives a written record of the working — components, timing, invocations. This is unusual in the trade. You can compare my protocol against my documentation and confirm the craft was set as promised.

References on Request

With their written consent, I can connect you with a past client whose case is closed. Ask in your intake if you want that before you commit. What they say is theirs; it is not a promise about your case.

"I am not the practitioner for everyone. If your case needs kindness before consequence, or if you want love-and-light, I am the wrong table. But if you need someone who will look at what has been done to you, name it plainly, and set thorns to the door — you have found the right desk." — Dana Batista
